Opening Act:
Have everyone share their own answer (there are no wrong answers), begin with the youngest: what does “Memorial Day” mean to you? What do you think it is?

Memorial Day is the last Monday of May every year. It’s a national holiday that places a special emphasis and focus on our men and women who serve in the armed forces, specifically it is a day to remember and honor those who have died fighting and defending the United States of America.
As a family, name off anyone you may know who has served or is serving in our military. Stop and pray.
Ask for whoever would like to answer: what kind of example are our serving men and women to us today?

Memorial Day is often thought of as “a long weekend” or a day to have a cookout. It’s way more than that. It’s a day we literally remember people who model service and sacrifice to the freedoms and ideals of our country. It’s a day where politics shouldn’t matter but solely the men and women who serve us.
Into the Word:
Open up a Bible and ask someone to read John 13:1-17 (you can even split it up)
Ask for whoever would like to answer: what sticks out to you about this act of service? Ask for whoever would like to answer: how is service “showing love” (verse 1)? Ask for whoever would like to answer: we don’t have to join the military necessarily to serve and show love, in what ways can we as a family or you as an individual take the model of Jesus and our serving men and women and serve others in special ways?
Closing Act:
OPTION: have a bowl of water and towel ready and wash each other’s hands to symbolize and bring John 13 to life for you and your family. Simply live out this service to one another.
Ask everyone to share (there are no wrong answers), begin with the oldest person: what ways can we as a family “wash feet” and remember Jesus by doing it?

Pray together.
